Monograph
Tablet
Pain and inflammation in conditions such as arthritis, musculoskeletal pain, backache, sprain/strain, dental pain, and post-operative pain (if this brand contains diclofenac/NSAID).
If ALTFENAC contains an NSAID such as diclofenac, it works by inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing prostaglandin production. This lowers pain, swelling, and inflammation.
Take by mouth with water, preferably after food to reduce stomach upset. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration as advised by a doctor; do not crush/chew if film-coated or sustained-release.
acidity/heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, headache, swelling (edema), rash
NSAIDs may increase risk of stomach ulcer/bleeding and heart attack/stroke, especially with long use or high doses. Use with caution in history of peptic ulcer/bleeding, kidney disease, liver disease, asthma, hypertension, heart failure, and in elderly. Stop and seek care if black stools, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, chest pain, breathlessness, or allergic reactions occur. Avoid use in the last trimester of pregnancy unless specifically prescribed.
blood thinners (warfarin), antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel), other NSAIDs, corticosteroids, SSRIs/SNRIs, methotrexate, lithium, ACE inhibitors/ARBs, diuretics, cyclosporine/tacrolimus, alcohol
