Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); may also be used for edema (fluid retention) associated with heart failure, liver disease or kidney disorders as prescribed.

Chlorthalidone is a thiazide-like diuretic. It increases excretion of sodium and water from the kidneys, reducing blood volume and lowering blood pressure; it also helps reduce swelling due to fluid overload.

Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily in the morning (to avoid night-time urination). Can be taken with or without food. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice; follow regular BP and electrolyte monitoring.

Increased urination, dizziness, headache, weakness, nausea, low potassium (hypokalemia), low sodium (hyponatremia), increased uric acid (gout), increased blood sugar, muscle cramps

Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment, diabetes, gout, dehydration, and in elderly patients. May cause electrolyte imbalance (low potassium/sodium) and low BP—monitor BP, kidney function and electrolytes. Can cause dizziness; avoid driving if affected. Inform doctor if you have sulfonamide allergy (cross-sensitivity possible).

Lithium (toxicity risk), digoxin (arrhythmias with low potassium), NSAIDs (reduced antihypertensive effect, kidney risk), corticosteroids/amphotericin B (increased hypokalemia), other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), antidiabetic medicines (may raise glucose), alcohol (adds dizziness/low BP)

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
