Amitriptyline (10mg)
Depression, neuropathic (nerve) pain, prevention of migraine/tension-type headache (as prescribed), anxiety associated with depression (off-label)
Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that increases levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake, improving mood and anxiety symptoms. It also modulates pain pathways, which helps in neuropathic pain and headache prevention.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at bedtime (may cause drowsiness); may be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water; do not stop suddenly—dose should be tapered under medical advice.
Sleepiness/drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, blurred vision, weight gain, nausea, increased appetite, difficulty urinating, sweating
May cause marked drowsiness—avoid driving/operating machinery until you know its effect. Risk of suicidal thoughts in some patients, especially early in treatment; seek help for worsening mood/behavior changes. Use with caution in heart disease/arrhythmias, recent heart attack, glaucoma, urinary retention/prostatic enlargement, thyroid disease, epilepsy, liver impairment, and in older adults (falls/confusion). Do not use with/within 14 days of MAO inhibitors. Do not stop abruptly; withdrawal symptoms may occur. Overdose can be dangerous—keep out of reach of children.
MAO inhibitors (contraindicated), alcohol and other CNS depressants (additive sedation), SSRIs/SNRIs/triptans/linezolid (serotonin syndrome risk), anticholinergics (increased side effects), antihypertensives (may alter BP), antiarrhythmics/QT-prolonging drugs (arrhythmia risk), tramadol (seizure/serotonin syndrome risk), carbamazepine/phenytoin (reduced levels), cimetidine (increased levels)
