Azithromycin 200 mg/5 ml (oral suspension)

Bacterial infections such as upper and lower respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), ear infections (otitis media), skin and soft tissue infections, and certain typhoid/enteric fever regimens as prescribed.

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops growth of susceptible bacteria and helps clear the infection.

Oral suspension. Reconstitute with boiled and cooled water up to the mark, shake well. Give the prescribed dose once daily (commonly), with or without food (give with food if stomach upset). Shake well before each dose and measure with a calibrated spoon/syringe. Complete the full course.

Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, rash

Use only for bacterial infections (not for viral cold/flu). Use with caution in liver disease, history of jaundice with azithromycin/macrolides, kidney impairment, myasthenia gravis, and in patients at risk of QT prolongation/arrhythmias (including low potassium/magnesium). Stop and seek care if severe allergy, severe diarrhoea, or signs of liver injury (yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine) occur.

Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (separate dosing), warfarin/other anticoagulants (↑ bleeding risk), digoxin (↑ levels), antiarrhythmics/QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, quinolones, antipsychotics), cyclosporine, ergot derivatives (avoid)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protect from light. After reconstitution, keep tightly closed; store as per label (often at room temperature) and use within the advised period; do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
