Monograph
Tablet
Used to treat high cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia, mixed dyslipidaemia) and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with cardiovascular risk factors.
Atorvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, an enzyme required for cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides and can modestly increase HDL (good cholesterol), reducing plaque formation and cardiovascular risk.
Tablet for oral use. Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed. Continue diet/exercise measures; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue, increased liver enzymes
Not recommended in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Seek medical help for muscle pain/weakness with fever or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis), especially in elderly, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, or with interacting medicines. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Periodic lipid profile and liver function monitoring may be advised.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, ritonavir/cobicistat), grapefruit juice (large amounts), fibrates (especially gemfibrozil), niacin, ciclosporin, colchicine, warfarin (monitor INR), diltiazem/verapamil, amiodarone
