High cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia), mixed dyslipidaemia, high triglycerides; prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in high-risk patients

Atorvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, a key enzyme in cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides and can modestly increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol, reducing cardiovascular risk over time.

Tablet for oral use. Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed. Continue diet/exercise advised by the doctor; do not stop without medical advice.

Headache, muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain, diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion, abdominal pain, fatigue, increased liver enzymes

Prescription medicine. Avoid in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Report muscle pain/weakness, fever or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis; higher risk with high dose). Use caution in kidney impairment, hypothyroidism, older age, heavy alcohol use. Liver function may be monitored. Not recommended in pregnancy; avoid during breastfeeding.

Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, ritonavir/cobicistat), cyclosporine, gemfibrozil/other fibrates, niacin, ezetimibe (increases myopathy risk), warfarin (monitor INR), digoxin (may increase levels), colchicine, grapefruit juice (can increase atorvastatin levels)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
