Treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D insufficiency, rickets/osteomalacia, adjunct in osteoporosis and fracture risk reduction in patients with low vitamin D
Cholecalciferol is converted in the body to active vitamin D metabolites that increase intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. This helps mineralize bone and maintain normal muscle and nerve function.
Oral tablet. Typically taken once weekly or as prescribed by a doctor; can be taken with or after food (preferably with a meal containing some fat for better absorption). Swallow whole with water.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, weakness, increased thirst, frequent urination
Use with caution in hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis D, kidney stones, severe renal impairment, sarcoidosis or other granulomatous diseases. Avoid taking additional high-dose vitamin D or calcium supplements unless advised. Overdose may cause high calcium levels (confusion, vomiting, dehydration, arrhythmias). Monitor calcium/vitamin D levels in long-term use.
Thiazide diuretics (risk of hypercalcemia), digoxin/cardiac glycosides (arrhythmia risk with hypercalcemia), anticonvulsants like phenytoin/phenobarbital (reduced vitamin D effect), rifampicin (reduced effect), cholestyramine/orlistat (reduced absorption), corticosteroids (reduced effect)
