Monograph
Clotrimazole 1% w/w cream
Treatment of fungal skin infections such as ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), cutaneous candidiasis, and pityriasis (tinea) versicolor; helps relieve itching, redness and irritation due to fungal infection.
Clotrimazole is an imidazole antifungal that inhibits synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This damages the fungal cell membrane, leading to leakage of cellular contents and death or inhibition of fungal growth.
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer to the affected skin and surrounding area 2–3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. Continue use for the full prescribed duration (often 2–4 weeks) even if symptoms improve; wash hands after application and avoid covering with tight/occlusive dressings unless advised.
Burning, stinging, itching, redness, irritation, dryness, peeling, rash
For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose and broken skin; rinse with water if contact occurs. Stop use and seek medical advice if severe irritation/allergic reaction occurs or if no improvement within 1–2 weeks (depending on site) or symptoms worsen. Use with caution on large areas or under occlusion. If used for genital area, note that topical azoles may reduce the effectiveness of latex condoms/diaphragms during and shortly after use. Not for scalp/nails unless advised by a doctor.
No significant systemic drug interactions expected with topical use; may reduce effectiveness of latex contraceptives (condoms/diaphragms) when applied to genital area; avoid using multiple topical products on same area unless advised.
