Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); management of chronic heart failure (as advised by a cardiologist); may be used after heart attack with left ventricular dysfunction when prescribed.

Carvedilol is a beta-blocker with additional alpha-1 blocking activity. It slows heart rate and reduces the force of contraction, and also relaxes blood vessels. This lowers blood pressure and reduces workload on the heart, improving symptoms in heart failure.

Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, preferably at the same time each day. For heart failure, it is usually taken with food to reduce dizziness; for hypertension it may be taken with or without food as advised. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Dizziness, fatigue, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, headache, nausea, diarrhea, weight gain, edema (swelling), breathlessness

May cause dizziness/low BP—rise slowly from sitting/lying. Do not stop abruptly (risk of worsening angina/heart attack). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may worsen bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask low blood sugar symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, kidney/liver impairment, and in patients with very low heart rate/heart block unless monitored. Seek urgent help for fainting, severe breathlessness, wheezing, or swelling of face/lips.

Other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), verapamil/diltiazem/amiodarone/digoxin (bradycardia/heart block), clonidine (rebound hypertension if stopped improperly), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycemia), NSAIDs (may reduce BP-lowering effect), CYP2D6 inhibitors like fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (may increase carvedilol levels), rifampicin (may decrease levels)
