Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, tonsillitis/pharyngitis, acute bronchitis, pneumonia), ear infections (otitis media), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and uncomplicated gonorrhoea (as prescribed).

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to bacterial cell death. It is effective only against bacterial infections, not viral illnesses.

Oral tablet; take exactly as prescribed. Usually taken with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset; swallow whole with water. Complete the full course even if you feel better; do not skip doses.

Nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache, dizziness, rash, candidiasis (thrush), increased liver enzymes

Use only for bacterial infections. Inform doctor if you have allergy to cephalosporins/penicillins or history of severe allergy. Use with caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed). Diarrhoea can be a sign of antibiotic-associated colitis (seek medical help if severe/watery/bloody). Prolonged use may cause superinfection (fungal/other bacteria).

Probenecid (increases cefuroxime levels), warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk/INR), antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs (may reduce absorption), oral contraceptives (may reduce effectiveness—use backup contraception), aminoglycosides or potent diuretics like furosemide (increased risk of kidney effects)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
