Monograph
Drop
Symptomatic relief of common cold in children: runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, watery eyes, and associated discomfort.
Typically combines an antihistamine to reduce sneezing/runny nose and a nasal decongestant to shrink swollen nasal blood vessels and relieve blockage. Some formulations may also include an antipyretic/analgesic to reduce fever and body ache (check label for exact actives).
Oral drops. Use only as prescribed by a pediatrician and as per the product label; measure with the provided dropper. Can be given with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, give after food. Do not exceed recommended dose/frequency and avoid combining with other cold/cough medicines containing similar ingredients.
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, constipation, restlessness/irritability (in some children), palpitations
Not for self-medication in infants/young children—use only on pediatric advice. May cause drowsiness or, rarely, paradoxical excitability in children. Use with caution in liver disease, heart disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention, and in children with asthma. Do not use with/within 14 days of MAO inhibitors. Seek urgent care if breathing difficulty, persistent high fever, rash, severe sleepiness, or symptoms last >3 days.
MAO inhibitors (risk of severe reactions), other antihistamines/cold preparations (additive side effects/overdose), sedatives/alcohol (increased drowsiness), tricyclic antidepressants (increased anticholinergic/cardiac effects), antihypertensives (reduced effect with some decongestants)
Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture. Keep bottle tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.
