Monograph
Tablet
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (as an adjunct to diet and exercise) to improve glycaemic control; may also be used in eligible patients to reduce risk of heart failure hospitalization and for chronic kidney disease as per prescriber advice.
Dapagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that reduces glucose reabsorption in the kidneys. It increases urinary glucose excretion, thereby lowering blood sugar and causing mild osmotic diuresis which can also lower blood pressure.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, at the same time each day, with or without food. Maintain adequate hydration; do not stop or change dose without medical advice.
Increased urination, urinary tract infection, genital fungal infection (thrush), thirst, dizziness, low blood pressure, nausea
Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Risk of genital mycotic infections and urinary tract infections; seek care for fever, flank pain, burning urination. Can cause dehydration/low BP—use caution in elderly, on diuretics, or with low BP. Rare risk of ketoacidosis (may occur even with normal sugars): stop and seek urgent care if nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, or unusual fatigue. Monitor kidney function; use caution/avoid in severe renal impairment as advised by doctor. May increase risk of hypoglycaemia when used with insulin/sulfonylureas; dose adjustment may be needed.
Insulin and sulfonylureas (increased hypoglycaemia risk), diuretics (increased dehydration/hypotension), other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), lithium (may reduce levels), nephrotoxic agents/NSAIDs (may worsen renal function in dehydration)
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
