Used to lower high cholesterol and triglycerides (dyslipidaemia) and to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular events, especially in patients with risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension or existing heart disease.

Atorvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that reduces cholesterol production in the liver. It lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides and can modestly increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol, reducing plaque formation risk.

Tablet: Take as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Continue a cholesterol-lowering diet and lifestyle changes; do not stop without medical advice.

Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness, raised liver enzymes

Do not use in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Seek urgent care for unexplained muscle pain/tenderness/weakness especially with fever or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Use with caution in patients with liver impairment, heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney problems, or history of statin-related muscle issues; periodic liver function tests may be advised. Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, protease inhibitors), cyclosporine, fibrates (especially gemfibrozil), niacin, colchicine, amiodarone, verapamil/diltiazem, digoxin, warfarin/other anticoagulants, grapefruit juice (large amounts)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
