Tablet
Used to treat inflammatory and autoimmune conditions such as asthma/allergic disorders, rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritis, skin diseases, nephrotic syndrome, and other conditions where systemic corticosteroids are indicated.
Deflazacort is a glucocorticoid (corticosteroid) that suppresses inflammation and immune responses. It reduces the release of inflammatory mediators and decreases swelling, redness, pain and allergic symptoms.
Take orally exactly as prescribed by the doctor, preferably with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet with water at the same time each day; do not stop suddenly—dose should be tapered under medical supervision.
Increased appetite, weight gain, indigestion, nausea, mood changes, insomnia, headache, increased blood sugar, fluid retention, increased blood pressure
Prescription-only steroid. Do not stop abruptly (risk of adrenal suppression). Use with caution in diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, glaucoma/cataract, peptic ulcer disease, kidney/liver impairment, and in the elderly. Increases risk of infections—avoid exposure to chickenpox/measles; consult doctor if fever or infection occurs. Live vaccines should generally be avoided during high-dose/long-term therapy. Long-term use may cause Cushingoid features, growth suppression in children, bone loss and eye problems; periodic monitoring may be needed.
Antidiabetic medicines (may need dose adjustment), NSAIDs/aspirin (increased GI ulcer/bleeding risk), anticoagulants like warfarin (altered INR), diuretics causing low potassium, rifampicin/phenytoin/carbamazepine (reduced steroid effect), ketoconazole/ritonavir (increased steroid effect), cyclosporine (increased toxicity), vaccines (reduced response; avoid live vaccines)
