Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (in selected patients), Primary biliary cholangitis (primary biliary cirrhosis), Cholestatic liver disorders where bile flow is reduced (as prescribed)

Ursodeoxycholic acid is a hydrophilic bile acid that reduces cholesterol saturation in bile by decreasing hepatic cholesterol secretion and intestinal absorption. It improves bile flow and protects liver cells from toxic bile acids, helping in cholestatic liver diseases and gradual dissolution of cholesterol gallstones.

Take orally as directed by your doctor, preferably with food or after meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised. Dose and duration depend on condition and body weight; take regularly and do not stop without medical advice.

Diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, constipation, headache, dizziness, rash/itching, increased liver enzymes

Use only under medical supervision. Not effective for calcified (radio-opaque) or pigment gallstones and may not be suitable if the gallbladder is non-functioning or bile duct is blocked. Use with caution in liver disease; periodic liver function tests may be required. Stop and consult a doctor if severe diarrhoea, worsening abdominal pain, jaundice, or allergic reaction occurs.

Cholestyramine, colestipol, activated charcoal (reduce absorption), aluminium-containing antacids (may reduce absorption), cyclosporine (levels may change), estrogen-containing oral contraceptives and clofibrate (may increase gallstone risk), warfarin/anticoagulants (monitor INR)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
