Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) powder 4.4 g sachet (WHO formula): Glucose (anhydrous) 2.7 g, Sodium chloride 0.52 g, Potassium chloride 0.30 g, Trisodium citrate dihydrate 0.58 g (to make 200 mL solution)

Prevention and treatment of dehydration due to acute diarrhoea, vomiting, heat exhaustion, excessive sweating; fluid and electrolyte replacement in mild to moderate dehydration

ORS provides an optimum balance of glucose and electrolytes. Glucose enhances sodium (and water) absorption via intestinal sodium-glucose co-transport, helping restore body fluids and correct electrolyte imbalance.

Dissolve the entire 4.4 g sachet in 200 mL of clean drinking water (do not boil after mixing). Give small frequent sips; in vomiting, give 1–2 teaspoons every few minutes. Use within 24 hours of preparation; discard leftover solution. Continue feeding/breastfeeding and normal diet as advised.

Nausea, abdominal bloating, vomiting (if taken too fast), increased thirst

Use only as directed; incorrect dilution can be harmful. Use with caution and seek medical advice in severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, high fever, blood in stools, very frequent watery stools, infants/elderly, kidney disease, heart failure, or if symptoms persist >24–48 hours. Not a substitute for IV fluids in severe dehydration. Diabetics should use with medical advice due to glucose content.

No clinically significant interactions when used as ORS; caution with concurrent medicines affecting electrolytes (e.g., diuretics, ACE inhibitors/ARBs, potassium supplements) or in renal impairment due to risk of electrolyte imbalance

Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep sachet tightly sealed until use. Prepared solution should be kept covered and used within 24 hours.
