Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), goiter, thyroid hormone replacement after thyroidectomy, TSH suppression in certain thyroid cancers (as prescribed)
Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4). It is converted to the active hormone T3 in the body and restores normal thyroid hormone levels to regulate metabolism, energy and growth.
Take once daily on an empty stomach with water, preferably 30-60 minutes before breakfast. Avoid taking with calcium/iron/antacids within 4 hours; dose is adjusted based on TSH as advised by doctor.
Palpitations, fast heartbeat, nervousness, tremor, headache, insomnia, sweating, weight loss, diarrhea, menstrual irregularities
Do not use for weight loss/obesity. Overdose can cause serious heart effects; use caution in heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, and elderly. Dose may need adjustment in pregnancy, after starting/stopping interacting medicines, or with changes in brand; regular TSH monitoring required.
Calcium salts, iron salts, antacids containing aluminum/magnesium, sucralfate, cholestyramine/colestipol, sevelamer (reduce absorption); rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin (reduce effect); warfarin (increases anticoagulant effect); antidiabetic medicines/insulin (dose adjustment); amiodarone (thyroid dysfunction)
