Use with caution (alcohol can raise uric acid and trigger gout attacks)
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout; helps prevent gout attacks by lowering uric acid (not for relief of acute gout attack).
Febuxostat inhibits xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in the production of uric acid. This reduces serum uric acid levels and helps prevent urate crystal deposition and gout flare recurrence over time.
Tablet for oral use. Take as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food. Swallow whole with water; take at the same time each day. Do not start/stop without medical advice; gout flares may increase initially—continue therapy as advised.
Gout flare (initially), nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, rash, abnormal liver function tests
Not for treating acute gout attack. Cardiovascular risk: use with caution in patients with history of heart disease/stroke; seek urgent care for chest pain, breathlessness, weakness or slurred speech. Monitor liver function periodically; discontinue if severe liver injury symptoms occur (jaundice, dark urine). Risk of severe skin reactions (rash, blistering)—stop and seek care. Use caution in kidney/liver impairment; dose adjustments/monitoring may be needed. Do not use with azathioprine or mercaptopurine.
Azathioprine (contraindicated), mercaptopurine (contraindicated), theophylline (use with caution/monitor), didanosine (avoid), warfarin (monitor INR as clinically indicated)
