Use with caution (alcohol can raise uric acid and trigger gout flares)
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout; helps prevent gout flares by lowering serum uric acid (not for treatment of acute gout attack).
Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that reduces production of uric acid in the body. Lowering serum urate helps dissolve urate crystals and prevents new crystal deposition, reducing gout attacks over time.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food; swallow with water. Therapy may be started with prophylaxis (e.g., NSAID/colchicine) to reduce flare risk; do not stop during a flare unless advised by doctor.
Gout flare (especially at start), nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, rash, abnormal liver function tests (raised transaminases)
Not for relief of acute gout attack; gout flares may increase initially—continue medicine and use flare prophylaxis if advised. Use with caution in liver disease; monitor liver function periodically. Cardiovascular risk warning: use caution in patients with established cardiovascular disease; discuss risks/benefits with clinician. Avoid in patients taking azathioprine or mercaptopurine. Seek urgent care for signs of severe allergy/skin reactions (rash, blistering, facial swelling, breathing difficulty).
Azathioprine, mercaptopurine (contraindicated/avoid due to severe toxicity), theophylline (use caution/monitor), didanosine (avoid/monitor uric acid), warfarin (generally no major interaction but monitor INR as clinically indicated)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
