Injection

Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), especially when oral iron is ineffective, not tolerated, or rapid iron replenishment is required; commonly used in chronic kidney disease, postpartum anaemia, heavy menstrual blood loss, and perioperative iron deficiency as advised by doctor.

Ferric carboxymaltose is an intravenous iron complex that releases bioavailable iron to replenish body iron stores. The iron is incorporated into haemoglobin and other iron-containing proteins, improving red blood cell production and oxygen-carrying capacity.

Injection/infusion to be administered only by a healthcare professional. Given intravenously as slow IV injection or IV infusion; dose and number of doses depend on body weight and haemoglobin/iron deficit. Do not self-administer; monitor for hypersensitivity during and after administration.

Nausea,headache,dizziness,flushing,hypertension during infusion,injection site reactions (pain,swelling,skin discoloration),rash,itching,muscle or joint pain,abdominal pain,diarrhoea,low phosphate (hypophosphataemia)

Risk of serious hypersensitivity/anaphylaxis—administer where resuscitation facilities are available and observe patient after dosing. Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to IV iron, iron overload, or anaemia not due to iron deficiency. Use with caution in liver disease, active infection, asthma/eczema/allergies. Hypophosphataemia can occur, especially with repeated/high doses—monitor phosphate if symptomatic (fatigue, muscle weakness, bone pain). Extravasation may cause long-lasting skin staining—ensure proper IV access. Not for intramuscular use.

Oral iron supplements (reduced absorption if started too soon—generally separate by at least 5 days after IV iron),other parenteral iron preparations (avoid concomitant use)

Store at room temperature (do not freeze). Protect from light. Keep in original pack; do not use if solution is discoloured or contains particles. Keep out of reach of children.
