Monograph
Tablet
Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency (with or without folate/B12 deficiency), including iron deficiency anemia due to poor diet, blood loss, pregnancy/lactation, or increased requirements.
Oral iron replenishes body iron stores and supports hemoglobin formation, improving oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. Folic acid and/or vitamin B12 (if present) help in red blood cell production and maturation, correcting megaloblastic changes.
Take tablet by mouth as advised by doctor. Usually taken once daily; best absorbed on an empty stomach but may be taken after food if it causes stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; avoid taking with milk, tea/coffee, antacids, or calcium supplements close to the dose.
Nausea, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, dark/black stools, metallic taste, heartburn
Do not use in iron overload disorders (e.g., hemochromatosis/hemosiderosis) or non–iron-deficiency anemia unless prescribed. May cause dark stools (harmless). Keep out of reach of children—accidental overdose can be dangerous. Use with caution in patients with peptic ulcer/IBD; take with food if gastric irritation occurs.
Antacids, calcium salts, zinc, magnesium (reduce absorption), tetracyclines, quinolones (ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin), levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, methyldopa, penicillamine—separate dosing by 2–4 hours; tea/coffee and dairy reduce absorption; vitamin C may increase absorption
