Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), especially when single-drug therapy is not adequate; helps reduce risk of cardiovascular events associated with uncontrolled BP.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels by blocking angiotensin II–mediated vasoconstriction and aldosterone effects. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that reduces calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle, causing vasodilation. Together they lower blood pressure more effectively than either alone.
Oral tablet: take as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice; regular BP monitoring is recommended.
Dizziness, headache, ankle/feet swelling (edema), flushing, fatigue, palpitations, nausea
Not recommended in pregnancy (may harm fetus); avoid use in severe liver impairment or biliary obstruction; use caution in kidney disease/renal artery stenosis, dehydration/low BP, heart failure, aortic stenosis. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function and potassium. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. Seek help for facial/lip swelling (angioedema) or severe allergic reactions.
Potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (risk of hyperkalemia), ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (increased risk of kidney impairment/hyperkalemia; avoid in diabetes with aliskiren), NSAIDs (reduced effect and kidney risk), lithium (toxicity risk), diuretics (may enhance low BP), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors/inducers affecting amlodipine (e.g., clarithromycin, azole antifungals, rifampicin), simvastatin (limit dose with amlodipine), grapefruit juice (may increase amlodipine effect in some patients)
