Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); protection of kidneys in type 2 diabetes with proteinuria; reduction of risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy; management of heart failure when ACE inhibitors are not suitable (as prescribed).
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks AT1 receptors, preventing angiotensin II–mediated vasoconstriction and aldosterone release. This relaxes blood vessels, lowers blood pressure and reduces strain on the heart and kidneys.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. Swallow with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice. Dose adjustments may be needed in dehydration/diuretic use or liver impairment.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, low blood pressure, increased potassium (hyperkalemia), nausea, diarrhea, back pain, nasal congestion
Contraindicated in pregnancy—can harm the unborn baby; stop and consult doctor immediately if pregnant. Use caution in kidney disease/renal artery stenosis, dehydration, low blood pressure, and liver impairment. Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium, especially after starting or dose changes. Risk of hyperkalemia increases with potassium supplements/salt substitutes or potassium-sparing diuretics. Seek urgent help for swelling of face/lips (angioedema) though rare.
Potassium supplements/salt substitutes, potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone, eplerenone, amiloride), ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (higher risk of kidney issues/hyperkalemia; avoid aliskiren in diabetes), NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) may reduce effect and impair kidney function, lithium (increased lithium levels/toxicity), other antihypertensives and diuretics (additive BP lowering).
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
