Treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D insufficiency, rickets/osteomalacia, adjunct in osteoporosis and fracture prevention, improves calcium absorption in hypocalcaemia due to deficiency
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is converted in the body to active vitamin D, which increases absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestine. It supports bone mineralization and helps maintain normal muscle and bone function.
Oral capsule/sachet (60,000 IU): take as prescribed, commonly 1 unit once weekly for 6–8 weeks or once monthly for maintenance. Can be taken with or after food (preferably a meal containing fat). Swallow capsule whole; do not exceed recommended dose.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, weakness, increased urination, increased thirst
Do not use in hypercalcaemia, hypervitaminosis D, severe renal impairment, nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) or known allergy. Use with caution in kidney disease, sarcoidosis/granulomatous disorders, and patients on calcium supplements (risk of high calcium). Monitor calcium and vitamin D levels with prolonged/high-dose use.
Thiazide diuretics (risk of hypercalcaemia), digoxin/cardiac glycosides (arrhythmia risk with high calcium), anticonvulsants like phenytoin/phenobarbital and rifampicin (reduce vitamin D effect), cholestyramine/orlistat (reduce absorption), corticosteroids (reduce effect), aluminium/magnesium antacids in renal impairment
