How It Works
Sulfasalazine is broken down in the colon to 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and sulfapyridine. 5-ASA reduces inflammation in the bowel lining, while sulfapyridine contributes to immunomodulatory/anti-inflammatory effects useful in rheumatoid arthritis.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Swallow tablet whole; do not crush or chew (delayed-release). Take after food with a full glass of water; maintain adequate hydration. Doses are usually divided through the day; follow your doctor’s schedule.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, rash, fever, reversible low sperm count, orange/yellow discoloration of urine/skin, mouth ulcers
Warnings & Precautions
Prescription medicine. Avoid if allergic to sulfonamides or salicylates. Monitor CBC and liver function periodically; risk of bone marrow suppression, hepatitis, and severe skin reactions (SJS/TEN). Use with caution in liver/kidney disease, asthma, G6PD deficiency, and in patients with blood dyscrasias. Stop and seek care if sore throat/fever, unusual bruising/bleeding, severe rash, jaundice, or breathing difficulty occurs. Ensure folate supplementation may be advised, especially in long-term use.
