Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); may be used in patients with co-existing coronary artery disease/angina or heart failure when prescribed as part of combination therapy to reduce cardiovascular risk
How It Works
Ramipril is an ACE inhibitor that relaxes blood vessels by reducing angiotensin II formation, lowering blood pressure and decreasing workload on the heart. Metoprolol succinate is a cardioselective beta-1 blocker that slows heart rate and reduces the force of contraction, helping control blood pressure and angina symptoms.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day. Swallow tablet whole with water; do not crush/chew (extended-release). Can be taken with or without food; if it upsets the stomach, take with food. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Prescription medicine. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. Monitor blood pressure, pulse, and kidney function; risk of increased potassium. Ramipril can cause dry cough and rarely angioedema—seek urgent care for facial/lip/tongue swelling or breathing difficulty. Use caution in kidney disease, renal artery stenosis, dehydration, heart block, asthma/COPD, diabetes, and in the elderly. Do not stop beta-blocker abruptly (risk of rebound hypertension/angina).
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs (reduced antihypertensive effect, kidney risk), potassium supplements/salt substitutes or potassium-sparing diuretics (hyperkalemia), diuretics (excess BP drop), lithium (toxicity), other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), aliskiren/ARBs (renal risk/hyperkalemia; avoid in diabetes), insulin/oral antidiabetics (mask hypoglycemia symptoms with metoprolol), calcium channel blockers like verapamil/diltiazem and digoxin/antiarrhythmics (bradycardia/heart block), alcohol (increased dizziness)
