Ketoconazole 2% w/v (medicated shampoo)
Dandruff (pityriasis capitis), seborrhoeic dermatitis of scalp, fungal-associated scalp scaling and itching
Ketoconazole is an antifungal that inhibits fungal cell membrane (ergosterol) synthesis, reducing the growth of Malassezia species linked with dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. This helps decrease flaking, scaling, redness and itching of the scalp.
For external use only. Wet hair and scalp, apply sufficient shampoo and massage into scalp to form lather; leave on for about 3–5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Typically use 2 times a week for 2–4 weeks, then once weekly or as advised by a doctor for maintenance. Avoid contact with eyes; if contact occurs, rinse with water.
Mild burning or stinging, itching, scalp irritation, dryness or oiliness of hair/scalp, redness, hair texture changes, hair fall (rare), allergic rash (rare)
For external use only. Avoid eyes, mouth and broken/irritated skin; rinse well if it gets into eyes. Stop use and seek medical advice if severe irritation, swelling, blistering or allergy occurs. Use with caution in very sensitive or inflamed scalp; do not use more often than advised. If symptoms persist or recur frequently, consult a dermatologist.
No significant systemic drug interactions expected with topical shampoo use. If using other medicated scalp products (topical steroids, salicylic acid, coal tar), use as directed by a doctor to avoid irritation.
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep cap tightly closed and out of reach of children.
