Monograph
Tablet
Management of high cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia/mixed dyslipidaemia), reduction of elevated LDL-C and total cholesterol when diet and lifestyle measures are inadequate; to reduce risk of cardiovascular events in appropriate high-risk patients as advised by a doctor.
Rosuvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase in the liver, reducing cholesterol synthesis and increasing LDL clearance from blood. Ezetimibe blocks intestinal absorption of cholesterol by inhibiting the NPC1L1 transporter, lowering cholesterol delivery to the liver. The combination provides additive LDL-lowering compared to either agent alone.
Take orally exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow tablet whole with water; continue diet/exercise measures. Do not stop or change dose without medical advice.
Headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness/fatigue, increased liver enzymes
Prescription medicine. Risk of muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis) increased with higher statin exposure—seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, especially with fever or dark urine. Liver function abnormalities may occur; periodic LFT monitoring may be needed and avoid in active liver disease. Use caution in kidney impairment, hypothyroidism, elderly, and heavy alcohol use. Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Inform doctor about diabetes risk, previous statin intolerance, or liver disease; avoid grapefruit excess is more relevant to some statins (less for rosuvastatin) but follow clinician advice.
Cyclosporine, gemfibrozil/other fibrates, high-dose niacin, colchicine (increased myopathy risk); protease inhibitors and some antivirals (may increase rosuvastatin levels); warfarin (INR changes); antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduce rosuvastatin absorption—separate dosing); bile acid sequestrants like cholestyramine/colesevelam (reduce ezetimibe absorption—separate dosing); erythromycin (may reduce statin exposure); other lipid-lowering agents
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
