Treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) such as difficulty in urination, weak stream, frequent urination and incomplete bladder emptying; may be used to aid passage of ureteric stones as advised by doctor

Tamsulosin is a selective alpha-1A adrenergic receptor blocker that relaxes smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck. This improves urine flow and reduces BPH-related urinary symptoms.

Take as prescribed, usually 1 capsule once daily, preferably after the same meal each day (commonly after breakfast). Swallow whole with water; do not crush or open the capsule. If a dose is missed, take the next dose at the usual time.

Dizziness, headache, postural hypotension (drop in BP on standing), nasal congestion, abnormal ejaculation (reduced/retrograde), weakness, nausea

May cause dizziness/fainting especially after the first dose or when standing up; rise slowly from sitting/lying. Use caution in patients with low blood pressure, severe liver impairment, or severe kidney disease. Inform eye surgeon before cataract/glaucoma surgery due to risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS). Not indicated for women and children. Seek medical help for allergic reactions or prolonged painful erection (priapism).

Other alpha-blockers (prazosin, terazosin), antihypertensives (additive low BP), PDE5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil—risk of hypotension), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) and CYP2D6 inhibitors (paroxetine) may increase levels, cimetidine may increase levels, warfarin/NSAIDs may alter elimination in some cases
