Uses & Benefits
Treatment of fungal infections of skin and nails such as onychomycosis (fungal nail infection), tinea corporis (ringworm), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), and other dermatophyte infections as prescribed.
How It Works
Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal that inhibits squalene epoxidase, blocking ergosterol synthesis in fungal cell membranes. This leads to toxic accumulation of squalene and results in fungal cell death, especially against dermatophytes.
Directions for Use
Tablet is taken by mouth exactly as prescribed. Can be taken with or without food; take at the same time each day. Duration depends on site and severity (skin infections usually weeks; nail infections often longer). Do not stop early without medical advice.
Side Effects
Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache, rash, itching, taste disturbance, loss of appetite, indigestion, dizziness, fatigue, elevated liver enzymes
Warnings & Precautions
Prescription-only antifungal. Terbinafine can rarely cause serious liver injury—avoid/use with caution in liver disease; baseline and periodic liver function tests may be advised, and stop/seek care if jaundice, dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting, right upper abdominal pain, unusual tiredness or itching occurs. Use caution in renal impairment. Rare severe skin reactions (SJS/TEN) and blood disorders have been reported—seek urgent care for widespread rash, fever, sore throat, easy bruising/bleeding. May worsen psoriasis or lupus in susceptible patients. Not for self-medication for prolonged use.
