Not recommended
Use with caution (may increase dizziness/low blood pressure)
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), especially when single-drug therapy is not adequate; helps reduce risk of cardiovascular events associated with uncontrolled BP.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels by blocking angiotensin II, lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that increases salt and water excretion through urine, reducing blood volume and BP. The combination provides additive blood pressure control.
Oral tablet; take as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; swallow whole with water. Because it contains a diuretic, taking it in the morning may reduce nighttime urination.
dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased urination, nausea, low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalance (low potassium/low sodium), raised uric acid, muscle cramps
Not recommended in pregnancy; stop and contact a doctor if pregnancy occurs. Use caution in kidney or liver impairment, dehydration, low sodium, or if you have a history of gout or diabetes (may affect glucose/uric acid). May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function (creatinine), and electrolytes (potassium, sodium). Seek urgent help for swelling of face/lips/tongue or breathing difficulty (angioedema) though rare.
NSAIDs (may reduce effect and worsen kidney function), potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics and salt substitutes (risk of high potassium), lithium (toxicity risk), other antihypertensives (additive low BP), diuretics/corticosteroids (electrolyte imbalance), aliskiren (avoid in diabetes; caution in renal impairment), ACE inhibitors/other ARBs (generally avoid dual RAAS blockade)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
