Monograph
Cefaclor 125 mg/5 ml oral suspension
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as ear infections (otitis media), throat/tonsil infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis), sinusitis, bronchitis and other respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections.
Cefaclor is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death of susceptible bacteria.
Oral suspension. Shake well before each dose; measure with a calibrated spoon/cup. Dose and duration are as prescribed by the doctor (commonly divided doses 2–3 times daily). Can be taken with or without food; taking with food may reduce stomach upset. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, rash, itching, urticaria, headache, dizziness, oral/vaginal candidiasis
Use only for bacterial infections; misuse may cause resistance. Do not use in patients with known allergy to cefaclor/cephalosporins; use caution in penicillin allergy (cross-reactivity possible). Use with caution in kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be needed). Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea/colitis (C. difficile) can occur—seek medical help for severe/persistent diarrhoea or blood in stools. Stop and seek urgent care for signs of severe allergy (swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread rash).
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk), probenecid (may increase cefaclor levels), live bacterial vaccines such as oral typhoid vaccine (reduced effect), broad use with other nephrotoxic drugs requires caution
Store at room temperature as per label; protect from heat, light and moisture. After reconstitution, store as directed on pack (often refrigerated 2–8°C or below 25°C) and use within the specified period; do not freeze. Keep bottle tightly closed.
