Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (in selected patients), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), cholestatic liver diseases with impaired bile flow (as prescribed)

Ursodeoxycholic acid is a hydrophilic bile acid that reduces cholesterol saturation in bile and helps dissolve cholesterol gallstones. It also improves bile flow and protects liver cells from toxic bile acids in cholestatic liver conditions.

Take the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew (SR formulation). Usually taken once daily or as directed by the physician, preferably after food/at bedtime. Duration is as advised; treatment for gallstones may take months.

Use only on medical advice. Not suitable for calcified (radiopaque) gallstones, non-functioning gallbladder, acute cholecystitis/cholangitis, or biliary obstruction. Monitor liver function tests during therapy, especially in PBC/cholestasis. Use caution in severe liver disease; stop and consult doctor if persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, jaundice worsening, or allergic rash occurs.

Bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine, colestipol) and antacids containing aluminium/Smectite may reduce absorption (separate by 2–4 hours). Oestrogens/oral contraceptives and lipid-lowering agents like clofibrate may increase bile cholesterol and reduce effectiveness for gallstone dissolution. May alter levels/effects of ciclosporin; monitoring may be needed.

Store below 25°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
