Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (in selected patients), Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and other cholestatic liver diseases (as prescribed), Cholestasis with impaired bile flow
Ursodeoxycholic acid is a bile acid that reduces cholesterol saturation in bile by decreasing hepatic cholesterol secretion and intestinal absorption. It improves bile flow and protects liver cells from bile-acid–induced injury, helping dissolve cholesterol gallstones and improve cholestasis.
Take by mouth as directed by the physician, preferably with food. Swallow tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised. Dose and duration depend on condition and body weight; regular follow-up and tests may be required.
Diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, constipation, headache, dizziness, skin rash, itching
Use only under medical supervision. Not suitable for calcified/non-cholesterol gallstones, non-functioning gallbladder, biliary obstruction, acute cholecystitis/cholangitis, or frequent biliary colic. Monitor liver function tests and clinical response; stop/seek care if severe abdominal pain, jaundice worsening, persistent diarrhoea, or allergic reactions occur. Use with caution in pregnancy/breastfeeding and in patients with advanced liver disease as advised by doctor.
Bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine, colestipol) and aluminium-containing antacids/sucralfate may reduce absorption (separate dosing by 2–4 hours). Oestrogens/oral contraceptives and clofibrate may increase gallstone formation and reduce efficacy. May affect levels of ciclosporin; monitor and adjust if needed. Other potential interactions: certain lipid-lowering agents; inform doctor of all medicines.
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
