Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood glucose control, usually as an add-on to diet and exercise; may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
Vildagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases levels of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP). This enhances glucose-dependent insulin release and reduces glucagon secretion, helping lower blood sugar with a low risk of hypoglycaemia when used without sulfonylureas/insulin.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, with or without food, at the same time each day. Do not stop or change dose without medical advice; continue diet and exercise recommendations.
Headache, dizziness, nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, constipation, upper respiratory tract infection, tremor (more likely with combination therapy), increased sweating (more likely with combination therapy)
Type 2 diabetes only (not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis). Use with caution in patients with liver disease; liver function tests may be advised and the medicine should be stopped if persistent elevation in liver enzymes or jaundice occurs. Use caution in moderate to severe kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be required). Seek medical help for severe abdominal pain (possible pancreatitis), blistering skin rash (bullous pemphigoid), or signs of allergic reaction. Risk of hypoglycaemia increases if used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Insulin, sulfonylureas (increased risk of hypoglycaemia), ACE inhibitors (may increase risk of angioedema), corticosteroids/diuretics (may worsen glycaemic control), other antidiabetic medicines (additive glucose-lowering).
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
