Treatment of epilepsy/seizure disorders (generalised and partial seizures); prevention of migraine (as prescribed); management of manic episodes in bipolar disorder (as prescribed)

Valproate increases the level of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the brain and reduces abnormal electrical activity of neurons. This stabilizes neuronal firing and helps prevent seizures and mood swings.

Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, preferably at the same time(s) daily. Swallow the prolonged-release tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew or split. Can be taken with or after food to reduce stomach upset.

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, indigestion, increased appetite, weight gain, tremor, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, hair loss, raised liver enzymes

Do not stop suddenly without medical advice (risk of seizures). Risk of serious liver injury and pancreatitis—seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, jaundice, dark urine, unusual tiredness. Use with caution in liver disease, mitochondrial disorders, bleeding disorders, kidney impairment, and in the elderly. May cause drowsiness—avoid driving if affected. Monitor liver function tests, blood counts and valproate levels as advised.

Carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, lamotrigine (increased risk of severe rash), topiramate (risk of hyperammonaemia/encephalopathy), aspirin and other anticoagulants/antiplatelets (bleeding risk), warfarin, benzodiazepines and other CNS depressants, rifampicin, erythromycin, cimetidine

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
