Management of anxiety disorders (short-term), acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms, muscle spasm/spasticity, status epilepticus and acute seizure control, premedication for procedures (sedation) as prescribed

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, by increasing GABA-A receptor activity. This produces anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant effects.

Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed; usually taken with or without food. Swallow with water; avoid stopping suddenly after repeated use—dose should be tapered by a doctor.

Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, muscle weakness, impaired coordination/ataxia, confusion, memory problems, slurred speech

Prescription-only benzodiazepine. May cause sedation, impaired driving/operating machinery and risk of falls (especially elderly). Risk of dependence, tolerance and withdrawal—avoid long-term use and do not stop abruptly. Use with caution in liver disease, respiratory disease (COPD/sleep apnoea), depression/suicidal risk, myasthenia gravis, and in elderly. Concomitant use with opioids, alcohol or other CNS depressants can cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma or death.

Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics) increase sedation/respiratory depression; CYP3A4/2C19 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, fluconazole, erythromycin, cimetidine, omeprazole, isoniazid) may increase levels; CYP inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) may reduce effect; additive effects with other benzodiazepines/sedatives

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
