Short-term management of anxiety disorders, panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia), anxiety associated with depression (as prescribed)
Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This produces a calming effect, reduces anxiety, and helps control panic symptoms.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed by the doctor, preferably at the same time each day; may be taken with or without food. Do not increase dose or stop suddenly—tapering is required to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, memory problems, confusion, dry mouth, nausea, constipation
Prescription-only benzodiazepine; may cause dependence, abuse and withdrawal—use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Can cause sedation and impaired alertness; avoid driving/operating machinery. Do not stop abruptly (risk of withdrawal, seizures). Use with caution in elderly, liver disease, respiratory disease (COPD/sleep apnoea), depression or suicidal ideation, and history of substance use disorder. Seek urgent help if severe sleepiness, breathing difficulty, or allergic reaction occurs.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics) increase sedation/respiratory depression. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole/itraconazole, clarithromycin/erythromycin, ritonavir/cobicistat) can raise alprazolam levels; CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin) can reduce effect. Additive effects with other anxiolytics/sedatives.
