Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA at the GABA-A receptor. This calms overactive nerve activity in the brain, reducing anxiety and panic symptoms and producing a sedative effect.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed by a doctor, usually with or without food. Swallow with water; do not increase dose or duration on your own. Avoid abrupt discontinuation—dose should be tapered as advised.
Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, sleepiness, confusion, memory problems, dry mouth, headache, nausea
Prescription-only benzodiazepine; can cause dependence, misuse and withdrawal symptoms. May impair alertness—avoid driving/operating machinery. Do not stop suddenly (risk of withdrawal, rebound anxiety, seizures). Use caution in elderly, liver disease, respiratory disorders (COPD/sleep apnea), depression/suicidal risk. Avoid use with other CNS depressants; risk of excessive sedation and respiratory depression.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, sedatives, antihistamines) increase sedation/respiratory depression; strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin, ritonavir/cobicistat, grapefruit juice) can increase alprazolam levels; CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, St John’s wort) may reduce effect; additive effects with antipsychotics, antidepressants, muscle relaxants
