Treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) and genital herpes; may be used for herpes simplex infections and for prevention/suppression of recurrent herpes in selected patients as prescribed.
How It Works
Acyclovir is an antiviral that is activated inside virus-infected cells and inhibits viral DNA polymerase. This blocks viral DNA replication, reducing viral multiplication and helping lesions heal faster.
Directions for Use
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually at evenly spaced intervals; start treatment as early as possible after symptoms begin. Can be taken with or without food; drink plenty of fluids. Do not stop early without medical advice.
Use with caution in kidney disease and in elderly patients; dose adjustment may be needed. Maintain adequate hydration to reduce risk of kidney-related side effects. Stop and seek medical help if signs of allergy (swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash) occur. Not a cure for herpes; can still transmit infection—use safe sexual practices. Caution in immunocompromised patients; use only under medical supervision.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid (may increase acyclovir levels), other nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides, amphotericin B, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, NSAIDs (increased kidney risk), mycophenolate mofetil (may increase exposure)
