How It Works
Metformin decreases glucose production in the liver and reduces absorption of glucose from the intestine. It also improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, helping the body use insulin more effectively.
Directions for Use
Take orally as prescribed by the doctor. Usually taken with/after meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew (especially if SR/ER).

Warnings & Precautions
Use with caution in kidney impairment; dose adjustment/avoidance may be needed—risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious). Avoid in severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, severe dehydration, severe infection, hypoxia/heart failure, or alcoholism. Temporarily stop before/after iodinated contrast studies and major surgery as advised. Monitor blood glucose, kidney function and vitamin B12 periodically.

Alcohol (increases risk of lactic acidosis), iodinated contrast media, cimetidine, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., topiramate, acetazolamide), diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid hormones, sympathomimetics, other antidiabetic drugs (risk of hypoglycemia when combined)
