Tablet
Treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in gout (to lower elevated uric acid levels and prevent gout flares). Not for treatment of acute gout attack.
Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It reduces formation of uric acid in the body, thereby lowering serum urate levels and helping prevent urate crystal deposition and gout attacks over time.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food. Continue regularly even if you feel well; gout flare prophylaxis (e.g., colchicine/NSAID) may be advised when starting. Do not use to treat an acute gout attack.
Gout flare at start of therapy, nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, rash, abnormal liver function tests
Not recommended for acute gout attack. May increase risk of cardiovascular events in some patients—use with caution in patients with heart disease/history of stroke. Monitor liver function periodically; stop and seek care for signs of liver injury or severe skin reactions. Use caution in renal/hepatic impairment; dose adjustment/monitoring may be needed. Ensure adequate hydration.
Azathioprine, mercaptopurine, theophylline (avoid/contraindicated due to toxicity risk), didanosine (avoid), warfarin (monitor INR), colchicine/NSAIDs (commonly co-used for flare prophylaxis)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
