Monograph
Zurig 80MG Tab contains Febuxostat (40mg). Prescription required.
Treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout; helps lower elevated uric acid levels to prevent gout attacks and urate crystal deposition.
Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that blocks the enzyme responsible for producing uric acid. This reduces serum uric acid levels and helps prevent formation and deposition of urate crystals in joints and tissues.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food. Continue regularly even if gout flares occur; a flare-prevention medicine (e.g., colchicine/NSAID) may be prescribed during initiation. Do not stop without medical advice.
Gout flare (initially), nausea, diarrhea, rash, headache, dizziness, abnormal liver function tests
Not for asymptomatic hyperuricemia. Gout flares may increase when starting therapy—do not discontinue during a flare. Use caution in patients with liver disease; monitor liver function. Cardiovascular risk warning: use caution in patients with established cardiovascular disease and follow prescriber guidance. Severe skin reactions (SJS/TEN) and hypersensitivity are rare—stop and seek care if rash, swelling, breathing difficulty occur. Dose adjustments/monitoring may be needed in renal impairment.
Azathioprine (contraindicated), mercaptopurine (contraindicated), theophylline (use with caution/monitor), didanosine (avoid), anticoagulants such as warfarin (monitor INR), other urate-lowering therapies (monitor uric acid and adverse effects)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
