Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (acute sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute otitis media, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and uncomplicated gonorrhoea (as prescribed).

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis (binding to penicillin-binding proteins), leading to cell lysis. It works only for bacterial infections, not viral infections.

Oral tablet: take exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Usually taken after food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; do not crush/chew. Complete the full course even if you feel better.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash, itching, oral/vaginal thrush

Prescription-only antibiotic. Do not use in patients with known allergy to cefuroxime/cephalosporins; use caution with history of severe penicillin allergy. Use with caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed). Prolonged use may cause superinfection (e.g., thrush) or antibiotic-associated diarrhoea/colitis; seek medical help for severe/persistent diarrhoea. May cause dizziness—use caution while driving if affected.

Probenecid (increases cefuroxime levels), anticoagulants such as warfarin (may increase bleeding risk/INR), antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs (may reduce absorption of cefuroxime axetil), oral contraceptives (possible reduced efficacy—use additional contraception during therapy and for 7 days after), other nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycosides, high-dose diuretics—monitor renal function).

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
