Monograph
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) 60000 IU
Treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D insufficiency, osteomalacia and rickets (as adjunct), supportive therapy in osteoporosis and bone health
Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is converted in the body to active vitamin D, which increases intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. It helps maintain normal blood calcium levels and promotes bone mineralization and strength.
Oral capsule/tablet (as prescribed). Common regimen for 60000 IU is once weekly for a defined period, then maintenance as advised. Preferably take with food (especially containing fat) to improve absorption; swallow whole with water.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weakness, headache, increased thirst, increased urination
Use only as directed; excess vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia and kidney problems. Use with caution in patients with hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis D, kidney disease, history of kidney stones, sarcoidosis or other granulomatous disorders. Monitor calcium and vitamin D levels if on long-term/high-dose therapy. Seek medical help if symptoms of hypercalcemia occur (confusion, severe vomiting, excessive thirst/urination).
Thiazide diuretics (risk of hypercalcemia), digoxin and other cardiac glycosides (arrhythmia risk with hypercalcemia), anticonvulsants like phenytoin/phenobarbital/carbamazepine (reduced vitamin D effect), glucocorticoids (reduced effect), cholestyramine/orlistat/mineral oil (reduced absorption), aluminum/magnesium-containing antacids (caution in renal impairment)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
