Syrups & Liquid Medicines

Cough syrups, pediatric formulations, tonics, suspensions, and oral solutions.

Liquid medicines — syrups, suspensions, solutions, and elixirs — are essential for patients who cannot swallow tablets or capsules. They are especially important in pediatric care, where accurate weight-based dosing requires flexible volumes.

Syrups are sweetened liquid medicines with the active ingredient dissolved in a sugar-based solution. Suspensions contain medicine particles suspended in liquid and must be shaken well before use. Oral solutions are clear liquids with the medicine fully dissolved.

Always use the measuring cup, dropper, or oral syringe provided with the product for accurate dosing. Kitchen spoons vary in size and should not be used for medicine. Store syrups according to label instructions — some require refrigeration after opening.

Syrups & Liquids — Frequently Asked Questions

Why do suspensions need to be shaken before use?
Suspensions contain insoluble medicine particles that settle at the bottom over time. Shaking ensures the medicine is evenly distributed so each dose contains the correct amount. Not shaking may result in under- or over-dosing.
How long can I use a syrup after opening?
Most syrups are good for 1-3 months after opening, but check the product label. Antibiotic suspensions often expire within 7-14 days after reconstitution and may need refrigeration. Discard expired or discolored syrups.
Can adults take pediatric syrups?
Technically yes, but the dose would need to be much larger. Adult tablets or capsules are more practical and cost-effective. Pediatric syrups are formulated for children's weight-based dosing and flavour preferences.
