What is the ALP Test?
The ALP test measures alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme made mainly in the liver, bile ducts and bones. It rises when bile flow is blocked or when bone is growing or being remodelled, so it is part of both liver and bone checks.

Children and teenagers have much higher ALP because their bones are growing, and ALP rises normally in late pregnancy from the placenta. Ranges also differ by lab and method.

What your ALP Test result means
- High
- Liver or bile duct causes include blocked bile flow and some medicines; bone causes include healing fractures, vitamin D deficiency and Paget disease. A GGT test helps tell liver from bone.
- Low
- Uncommon. It can be seen with malnutrition, zinc or magnesium deficiency, hypothyroidism, or a rare inherited condition called hypophosphatasia.
One result is not a diagnosis. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, history, medicines and other tests.
