What is the Anti-TPO Test?
The anti-TPO test looks for antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme the thyroid needs to make hormones. Their presence suggests the immune system is attacking the thyroid, which is the commonest cause of an underactive thyroid.

What your Anti-TPO Test result means
- Positive
- Suggests autoimmune thyroid disease, most often Hashimoto's thyroiditis; it is also found in many people with Graves' disease. With a high TSH, it supports an autoimmune cause and a higher chance of lasting hypothyroidism.
- Positive with normal thyroid levels
- Found in roughly 1 in 10 adults, more often women. It does not need treatment on its own, but TSH is usually checked periodically, and more closely in pregnancy.
- Negative
- Autoimmune thyroid disease is less likely, though a small number of people with Hashimoto's test negative.
