How to choose
Start with the base. Silicone-based serums (look for dimethicone or cyclomethicone on the label) give the strongest anti-frizz coat and survive humidity, which is why they work in Chennai or Mumbai monsoons. Oil-based serums with argan, almond or vitamin E condition dry ends and suit coarse, thick hair, but can weigh down fine hair. Second, match weight to hair: fine or oily-scalp hair needs a light, watery serum; thick, curly or chemically treated hair can take a richer one. Third, look for heat protection if you blow-dry or straighten often. Fourth, patch-test if your scalp is sensitive: serums are meant for lengths and ends, not the scalp. Finally, check the quantity you actually need. Two to three drops is enough for shoulder-length hair, and more only builds up residue.
Who really needs this
Useful for dry, wavy, curly or coloured hair that frizzes in humid weather, and for anyone who blow-dries or straightens often. Not a treatment for hair fall or thinning: a serum coats the hair you already have and does not change how much falls. If you have an itchy, flaky scalp or sudden increased shedding, look at the cause (see our dandruff shampoo and hair oil guides) or see a doctor rather than adding products to the lengths.
