How to choose
Choose gel, water-gel or lotion textures rather than thick creams. Look for hyaluronic acid or glycerin for hydration, ceramides to support the barrier, and niacinamide for oil balance. 'Oil-free' and 'non-comedogenic' on the label are good signs, though not guarantees. Avoid heavy butters, mineral-oil-rich creams and strong fragrance if you break out. Apply a pea to coin-sized amount on slightly damp skin after cleansing, then sunscreen in the morning. In humid coastal cities a gel alone is often enough; in air-conditioned offices or winters you may need a slightly richer lotion.
Who really needs this
Oily, combination and acne-prone skin, and anyone using acne treatments, salicylic acid or retinoids that dry the skin. Not every oily face needs a separate moisturiser in peak summer; a hydrating gel sunscreen may be enough. If skin is red, peeling or itchy despite moisturising, it may be dermatitis; see a doctor.
